Terry Callier - You Goin' Miss Your Candyman

ORIGINATION What Color Is Love
LAST LISTENED TO december
CHANCE OF WAKING TO IT low
RATING

Terry Callier is possessed of a voice that not only has a remarkable range, but also is incredibly smooth. He is best known for this track and Dancing Girl, which is from the same album.

You Goin' Miss Your Candyman sits somewhere in the land between jazzy soul and folk music. More or less. It runs through several acts that are at times haunting or bluesy, but are always funky.

It opens on Callier's guitar, which is a constant through the track and provides much or the folk feel. A funky bass line and a prominent conga are as constant as the guitar and stir in some funk. Callier's voice is the only other constant and it is deep and smooth and constant.

The song builds to several crescendos throughout its seven minutes. These are augmented by brass and Callier stretching his voice out some. He even howls the old bluesman's train call which is beautiful.

To avoid disappointment, be warned that the rest of the album (Dancing Girl aside) is really very far from this calibre.
